Camino Portugués

A Pilgrim's Guide to Camino Portugués:

A journey of 612 km (380 miles) through stunning unspoiled countryside starting in Lisbon. Alternatively 241 km (150 miles) from the medieval heart of Porto thence winding its way up through northern Portugal to cross over the rio Minho into Spain at Tui.

There are many pilgrim paths to Santiago but there is none more soulful and significant than the Portuguese Way. And there is none so intimately connected with the actual life and ministry of St. James as well as his death and burial. It was here that he first preached Christ’s message in Iberia and it was also along this route that his body made its last journey to Libredon, later to become known and loved all over the world as Santiago de Compostela. Little wonder that it has become the second most popular pilgrim route to Santiago (after the Camino Francés).

The 2nd edition released in 2009 includes route finding information and accommodation details for the section from Lisbon to Porto which now has been fully waymarked. However, pilgrim facilities are still limited so it should only be contemplated by experienced walkers with a good level of fitness and a reasonable grasp of the Portuguese language.
